China Says It May Use Yuan to Help Stability

SHANGHAI -- China's top governing body pledged to use a range of means, including possibly its currency, to ensure its banking and financial systems function well as it implements a major economic-stimulus package.

The State Council statement, issued after a cabinet meeting run by Premier Wen Jiabao, is the latest reminder of Beijing's aggressive effort to offset downward pressure on its economy.

Beijing said it will ensure ample liquidity in its financial system and might use "various measures, including required reserves, interest rates and the exchange rate."
